Student Spotlight: miles h.

1. How long have you taken music lessons?

Miles has been taking music lessons since the beginning of 2025 and is very serious about his musical learning.

2. What instruments do you play?

His favorite instruments so far are drums, egg shakers, and the triangle.

3. Favorite musical artists?

He is a big fan of The Laurie Berkner Band, thanks to Miss Emily. He also really likes any soft yoga music that Mommy plays in the car (especially songs that feature flutes). He's a pretty big fan of his dad's, too, because his dad plays guitar and drums.

4. What are your short and long-term goals with music?

We hope that Miles will continue to grow in his love for music and take piano lessons when he's old enough. From there, the great big world is his oyster. Whatever he wants to play and explore is great. We just love watching him engage with his creativity, and we want to continue to nurture that spark for him.

5. What is your favorite part about taking music lessons?

Miles loves playing the big kid drums in the back room before and after class. During Miss Emily's sessions, he loves the scarves and learning about whatever new instrument Miss Emily has for the week. He is a fan of story time, too.

6. What are your hobbies?

Miles loves throwing balls with Mom and Dad, playing with his cars each and every day, and listening to stories whenever he gets the chance. He also adores watching his three older cousins dance and play soccer. And, he likes to play with his cousin, Chloe, who takes music class with him! They love going to the zoo together.

7. What are some of your favorite foods?

Miles loves eggs, carrots, chocolate, and any type of potato so far. He also loves avocados and, recently, bananas.

8. What is the coolest thing you’ve learned in lessons recently?

Recently, Miles was introduced to The Laurie Berkner Band, and his little mind has been blown. Mom and Dad now have her on repeat as much as possible. He also just learned how to make his own shaker for home use. He has a knack for turning anything in his hand into a drum stick, and banging said items everywhere he can!

9. Do you have any performances coming up or have you had a performance recently?

Our passionate, intense little one is looking forward to performing when he's older and ready. We can't wait to watch him. We want him to know we're proud of him no matter what!

10. Why should other people play music?

Music is such a beautiful way to express your creativity, have fun, and explore feelings and emotions. We can tell Miles finds a lot of joy and comfort in melodies and learning new instruments. He loves to dance along to his favorite jams and tries to mimic the sounds that he hears. Other people should play music to tap into their own creative wells. Let your light shine. We all want to hear the music you have within you.

“My husband and I have had so much fun watching Miles engage with his musicality at such a young age, with an intensity that makes us both chuckle. Miles is very serious about his art, apparently. We appreciate the safe space Miss Emily has created for him to grow and learn and be himself. There’s a real sense of community in Miles’s class, amongst the parents and kiddos, and that makes it fun for us all. I am so impressed with Miss Emily’s class plans each week. She’s a local gem for all music lovers, in my opinion. The class time flies, and I learn something, too! It’s the highlight of our Tuesdays. It’s a joy watching all these kids explore their creativity through music and instruments. Our future is bright if they’re able to retain this sense of joy in playing through life.”
— Laura, Miles' Mom

“It has been a joy to see Miles grow in music class. He has started out as a shy student, but through consistent classes (thanks to his amazing parents, Laura and Nick), has opened up and loves music class. He especially loves the drums, and plays in the drum room after class. I will always remember the day that Miles’s dad, Nick, played some great rhythms on the toddler drums for a spontaneous circle dance and parachute game! We love to celebrate and build a musical community in class.”
